The Mobile Crane Class 1 course is a comprehensive 320-hour program designed and approved by The International Union of Operating Engineers. It has a standardized curriculum for students to become apprentices and also those upgrading operating skills.

This program consists of 60% classroom training, and 40% field training/practical on mobile cranes. It's based on the following four units of instruction: 

Unit 1 - Technical Knowledge - 42 Hours
Unit 2 - Site - 16 Hours
Unit 3 - Load Charts - 66 Hours
Unit 4 - Operations - 36 Hours

Curriculum supplied for the participants consists of four binders with handouts, one IPT Crane & Rigging Training Manual and a copy of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations. Each instructional unit is comprised of a number of modules, each which has safe work practices and regulations as part of the lectures and discussions.

  • Calculating Capacities on Lattice Boom Cranes

  • Calculating Capacities on Telescopic Boom Cranes

  • Identifying Load Center of Gravity

  • Understanding Range Diagrams

  • Understanding Load Moment Indicators (LMI)   

Unit 4

  • Verifying the Weight of the Lift

  • Multiple Crane and Complex Lifts

  • Mobile Crane Communications

  • Communicating with On Site Personnel

  • Principals of Assembly and Disassembly

  • Preparing Cranes for Transport

  • Conditions Affecting Capacity

  • Safe Operating Procedures

Tests are given on each module. Participants must achieve an average of 70% on the total of all module tests to successfully complete this course.

FIELD TRAINING
Field training consists of 4 modules that develop skills in the following areas:
Unit 1 - Familiarization with equipment - 20 Hours
Unit 2 - Basic Functions - 30 Hours
Unit 3 - Hoisting Equipment - 20 Hours
Unit 4 - Operating under Various Conditions - 90 Hours

  • Identifying Various Equipment

  • Load Chart and Logbook Locations and Information Movements

  • Service Points on Machines

  • Grease and Adjustment Points

Unit 2

  • Complete Preoperational Inspection

  • Start up Machine and Perform Basic Outrigger Operation

  • Setup and Level Crane 

Unit 3

  • Handling Rigging

  • Inspecting Slings and Shackles

  • Rigging Various Shape Loads

  • Signalling Crane Movements    

Unit 4

  • Compound Crane Movements

  • Rigging and Hoisting Loads

  • Precision Placement of Loads

  • 2 Crane Lifts 

Skill development is determined by a practical examination involving moving a load around a course within a specified time limit.
